Choosing a Dog
By Bob Blick
Is there a kid anywhere who does not want to own a dog? I have had three or four in my lifetime and may be picking up another. My grandson is six and wants one badly and they are not allowed one in their apartment. Choosing a dog that will fit you is important. With the advent of the internet, you can check out the tendencies and sizes of the various breeds. Use that for a general overview only. All dogs are unique and they don't always follow the tendencies of their breed. I know small dogs, on average, are known as barkers. Kind of a Napoleon syndrome I guess. However, our neighbor has two yorkies. One is definitely a barker and the other one you hardly ever hear a peep out of. Some dogs are noted as being real good around kids while others come with a warning. The owner has a lot to do with how the dog will turn out. If they are raised around a child, they have a much better chance of being kid friendly. At the same time, I am sorry if I offend anyone but dogs that are known to be fierce, such as a pit bull as one example; well that is a dog I would have nowhere near our grandson or us as well. We also have had very good luck with mixed breeds so you definitely do not have to go out and spend a large amount of money on a dog with papers. In fact, to get registration papers or a pedigree, a dog doesn't actually have to meet any qualifications of health, temperament, behavior, or any such sound structure. So weight in those facts before you spend your hard earned money. Decide if you want a big dog or a small one, whether the dog will be around kids, the size of your backyard and the time you have available to pamper your pet, and then read all you can and make your decision. A big dog makes more of a mess and a little dog may be too fragile for your kids. You can get a lot more information on training a dog at my site but be certain you bookmark it as I will be adding much more to it, not only about dogs but about pets as well. |
